Atatürk used the word “Republic” for the first time in an interview with the Austrian newspaper Neue Freie Presse published in Vienna on September 23, 1923: “The development of the new Turkey is not yet complete. This path must be traveled to the end. Changes, corrections and improvements are necessary to find its final and best form. But Turkey will soon have the structure it deserves in its entirety and spirit. And this is the republic. I will repeat the first articles of the new Turkish Constitution: Sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the nation. Executive power and legislative authority are vested in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the only true representative of the nation. These two can be summarized in one word: Republic!”
