 It has been a long time since man lost himself. Not thinking about his existence, or perhaps not being asked to think, has driven him to different fields. His addiction to a computer game, drugs or alcohol is probably the result of an escape from this act of thought. On the other hand, addiction is a social process as well as a biological one. Although the addictive process occurs in the individual's own brain, stress and the behavior of others play an important role in pushing people towards addiction. Frequent use of alcohol, drugs and drug analogues causes changes in neurons, including changes in gene expression. Over time, these changes begin to occur more and more frequently and in larger and larger areas of the central nervous system, like drops of paint on a hard plate. They are especially persistent in developing brains. The earlier children and adolescents experience an addictive substance or occupation, the more likely they are to retain the powerful emotional memory that once made them feel so good, even if they abstain from the substance or occupation. This book examines the causes and consequences of 'addiction'.
